L´Aquila Italy

L'Aquila is a city and comune in Southern Italy, both the capital city of the Abruzzo region and of the Province of L'Aquila. Home to the University of L'Aquila, it is a lively college town and, as such, has many cultural institutions: a repertory theater, a symphony orchestra, a fine-arts academy, a state conservatory, a film institute. There are several ski resorts in the surrounding province: Campo Imperatore, Ovindoli, Pescasseroli, Roccaraso, Scanno. There are at least six churches to visit including the Duomo, located on the Piazza del Duomo, and Santa Maria di Collemaggio, a Templar church with beautiful rose windows. Other places to see include the Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo, which is located in the northend of the city. The Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo has several different sections including paintings, Roman finds, but its most famous feature is the skeleton of a mammoth that was found in the local area. Also there is the Fontana delle 99 Cannelle that represent the 99 churches that were originally in the city.
